Many of you have begun or will soon begin finals week. Ekk! I remember those terrible all-nighters in the library, that last minute cram session, and that feeling of dread in my stomach when I realized that I studied the wrong material. Some grades were better than others; some exams covered everything I learned in class while other professors took an abstract approach. It took some time to really understand what worked for me in terms of studying. By the end of my sophomore year, I had sort of figured it out. But it wasn’t until halfway through my senior year that I realized how to take care of my body and mind, too. Here are some of my tips for surviving finals week.

// Disconnect //Desconéctate:

It is easier said than done but finding an environment where you can actually concentrate is essential to performance. Now, I don’t just mean minimizing that Facebook page in between chat sessions with your friends, I really mean going the whole nine yards: log out of your social accounts, turn-off your phone, minimize your extracurricular activities; do what you need to do to help yourself. Need a little help staying faithful to your goals? Using plugins such as Productivity Owl or Strict Workflow will block all those particularly enticing web pages from coming up on your browser in the first place. What’s more, you can even adjust the settings so that you can take breaks now and then and won’t completely be out of the loop.

//Learn How to Say “No”//Aprende a decir "No"

While many diligent students will probably be pouring over their books, hidden in some cubby hole in the library in preparation for the exam, you will always manage to at least find one person that has better things to do than study. By better things I mean becoming the most active person on campus: parties, events, meetings, they are always there. This is usually because (1) he/she is not too concerned about his/her grade on the test or (2) he/she has been fooled into believing that cramming hours before the exam is just as effective as studying. If this party-hard person happens to be your friend or your significant other, be prepared to say “no” to all of those parties, social events, and dinner dates.

Preparing for an exam, no matter how painful, is about saying “yes” to your successes and “no” to the people standing in between you and your goal. This does not have to be a permanent situation. Believe me; you will have all semester to socialize with your best friend. But, one bad test score, regardless of how silly it may sound, can affect your entire college career. Especially if going to graduate school or other academic institutes is in your future.

//Have Courage//Ten valor:

Saying “go with your gut” sounds cliché and maybe even sound like bad-testing advice but in the middle of an exam, most people suddenly become filled with doubt. Fortunate for some, the subject is easy peasy and the exam is a piece of cake. However, for others, the answers don’t come so naturally. You may be torn over the “actual” meaning of a question or between two answers. While some exams are made to be failed, some professors seem to enjoy making you feel like their subject is unconquerable, for the most part, the answer is much less complicated than you think.

When you hear hoof beats, think of zebras, not horses. Don’t jump to the most extreme case when the answer is asking for something simple. Answer the question enough to show that you know but not so much that it seems like you really don’t know what you are talking about. In other words, don’t try to cram an entire semester worth of material into a final essay

//Clean Up Your Act//

Just because you’re poring over your exams, doesn’t mean that you need to put your health in danger. Well, maybe that’s a little too extreme. Factors such as stress and all-nighters will have a terrible effect on your appearance. Skip the make-up talk, things like lack of sleep, a bad diet, gallons of coffee, and a bunch of sugar is neither good for your body nor your brain. ¿Food for thought? Fruits such as blueberries, apples, and cantaloupe and nuts such as walnuts, almonds, and pine nuts are some of the few foods that boost brain power, memory, and health. ¡Use it wisely!

Personal tip: Store sliced (or frozen) versions of this fruit in your fridge, preferably in small Ziploc bags. Not only will it be easy to grab and go on your way to the library but will be something better than Cheetos and soda if you are planning to pull an all-nighter in your room.

Whether this is your first exam or last one, preparing your body and mind is just as essential as memorizing all those words or equation. Take care of yourself and ¡good luck!

Take a deep breath. You got this.
Toma una respiración profunda, tu tienes esto.
