"La otra hermana Bennet" es la nueva serie de televisión de BBC One, basada en la novela con el mismo nombre de Janice Hadlow. Adaptada por Sarah Quintrell y producida por Bad Wolf.
La serie cuenta la historia desde el punto de vista de Mary Bennet (interpretada por Ella Bruccoler), una de las hermanas Bennet que siempre fue dejada de lado y conocida como la 'marginada' con un gran corazón. Habíamos escuchado un poco sobre ella en la película de 2005 "Orgullo y prejuicio".
The Other Bennet Sister is the new BBC One television series, based on the novel of the same name by Janice Hadlow. Adapted by Sarah Quintrell and produced by Bad Wolf.
The series tells the story from the point of view of Mary Bennet (played by Ella Bruccoler), one of the Bennet sisters who was always left out and known as the 'outsider' with a big heart. We had heard a little about her in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice.

No es necesario ver la película o la serie de 1995, ya que Mary mediante su narración en voz en off, nos narra el contexto inicial, explicando la importancia de la belleza y las habilidades que la sociedad de 1800 esperaba de una mujer con el fin de atraer prospectos y lograr casarse para asegurar su futuro. Mary es consciente de que no cuenta con los mejores atributos para destacar: ella es tímida, le gusta leer y hablar sobre historia o geología. Su madre considera que ella no es la más atractiva de sus hijas y lo recalca en múltiples ocasiones diciéndole a ella que esa es una de las mayores razones por la que se le dificulta atraer la atención de diferentes pretendientes. Mary hace varios intentos durante la serie para satisfacer a su madre, pero estos siempre terminan siendo nulos.

Luego del matrimonio de su hermana Lizzie y el Sr. Darcy, un acontecimiento terrible ocurre y deja el futuro de Mary en la incertidumbre, pero al mismo tiempo se convierte en una oportunidad para ampliar su aprendizaje en un nuevo escenario y conocer personas que no la ven como un estorbo sino que disfrutan de su compañía y la impulsan a ser ella misma.

En cada capítulo, mi cariño por Mary crece, ya que a pesar de sufrir toda su vida con los comentarios despectivos y las actitudes negativas por parte de su madre, ella siempre mantenía su amabilidad y empatía a otros. Toda su tristeza y sus inseguridades las ocultaba detrás de su pasión por los libros - eso explica por qué sus temas de conversación se relacionan con su lecturas y su pasión al hablar sobre ellas.

Cuando Mary se muda para trabajar como institutriz de los hijos de su tío y de su dulce esposa - aquella que siempre le ha brindado su hombro cuando lo ha necesitado - el ambiente cambia por completo. Ellos la animan a tomar sus propias decisiones y a programar sus clases, mostrando que aunque sea algo muy pequeño era algo que antes Mary no podía hacer. Sus tíos le permitieron tener su propia voz y sentir un sentido de permanencia que antes ella no experimentaba.
Por supuesto que hay romance. De hecho, hay un triángulo amoroso para nuestro personaje quien muchas veces confunde el cortejeo como cortesía; y durante los diferentes episodios, Mary entiende que es una persona extraordinaria y fácil de amar.
Cada personaje que entra en la vida de Mary se convierte en un elemento que aporta en su crecimiento y madurez. La dirección del romance muestra ese anhelo tan humano de querer a alguien, la curiosidad por saber cómo está la otra persona, incluso cómo el más mínimo contacto puede dejar tu mente en blanco porque internamente estas gritando con esas pequeñas interacciones.
La serie solo tiene 10 episodios y cada uno dura 30 minutos. Para mí, cada minuto lo vale.

You don't need to watch the film or the tv serie from 1995, as Mary, through her voice-over gives us context on the importance of beauty and skills that the 19th-century society expected of a woman in order to attract suitors and secure her future. Mary is aware that she doesn't have the most appealing attributes; she is shy and prefers to read and talk about history and geology. On the other hand, her mother is convinced that Mary is the least attractive of her daughters and insists that this is the main reason she fails to draw the attention of potential suitors. Throughout the series, Mary repeatedly tries to please her mother, but every effort ends in disappointment.
After her sister Lizzie’s marriage to Mr. Darcy, a terrible event occurs that leaves Mary’s future in limbo, but at the same time, it becomes an opportunity for her to broaden her horizons in a new environment and meet people who don’t see her as a burden but rather enjoy her company and encourage her to be herself.

In each episode, my affection for Mary grows, because even though she suffered her whole life from her mother’s derogatory comments and negative attitudes, she always remained kind and empathetic toward others. She hid all her sadness and insecurities behind her passion for books - which explains why her conversations revolve around her reading and her enthusiasm when talking about it.

After Mary moves in with her uncle and his kind wife to become the new governess for their children, they begin to encourage her to make her own decisions and plan her own lessons. At that time, it was uncommon for a woman of her age to have such independence, so their support was a small but remarkable gesture. They gave her the freedom to express her own voice and offered her a sense of belonging she had never experienced before.
Of course there's romance. In fact, there's a love triangle involving our main character, who often mistakes flirting for politeness; and over the course of the episodes Mary comes to realize that she is an extraordinary person who is easy to love.
Every character who enters Mary’s life becomes a factor that contributes to her growth and maturity. The way the romance is portrayed captures that very human longing to love someone, the curiosity about how the other person is doing, and even how the slightest contact can leave your mind blank because, deep down, you’re screaming with excitement over those small interactions.
The series has only 10 episodes, each 30 minutes long. If you ask me, every minute is worth it.
