The Paper is a spin-off of the acclaimed 2005 series The Office (U.S.). It keeps the mockumentary sitcom format and mentions about the former company Dunder Mifflin, which was dedicated to selling paper and eventually shut down before being acquired by Enovate - a company that sells toilet paper and owns the declining newspaper Toledo Truth-Teller, the main setting of this new storyline that follows the employees of the paper and their new editor-in-chief, Ned Samson.

The plot shows the newspaper falling apart, and Ned’s arrival is an attempt at renewal. Although he was one of Softees' top toilet paper salesmen, his true passion is journalism, so he applied for the editor-in-chief position. He takes on the role with the firm intention of restoring the paper’s essence: reporting the truth, conducting investigations, and serving the community. He also launches a “volunteer journalist” initiative among his colleagues, encouraging each of them to write their own article for the different sections of the paper, since Mare is the only actual journalist on staff.
Long before Ned came along, Esmeralda, the newspaper’s editorial director, created TTT Online in an attempt to adapt to the digital world. She publishes sensationalist headlines on the paper’s website to draw in readers, and it has worked. She became the soul of the show, delivering sharp humour through her extravagant situations and her one-sided battle against Ned, whom she saw as having taken her editor-in-chief role.
Meanwhile, Oscar is the only character reprising his role from The Office, now as accounting director for the toilet paper brand and the Toledo Truth-Teller.
I wasn't fully convinced by the main protagonists. Ned is funny in individual scenes, while Mare is the only realistic voice in the newsroom - she's the complete opposite of Ned. However, they both share a passion for journalism and reporting, whereas the rest of the staff are just there for the vibe. Their dynamic is predictable and not very engaging. While, characters such as Adelola and Adam are far more interesting in their limited screen time, delivering stronger laughs.
The Paper, despite sharing the same format, develops a completely different storyline and provides closure to Dunder Mifflin. The exceptions are Oscar and Ken, a character who tries- without much success- to emulate Michael Scott, though he manages to entertain at times.
